Home Builders Care Assessment Center (Formerly known as the Men’s Emergency Shelter) provides year-round, overnight shelter for men experiencing homelessness in our community. Last year the Men’s Emergency Shelter served 950 men, keeping our neighbors with some of the greatest need off the streets.
Shelter residents are encouraged to meet with case managers who connect them with supportive services, work on individual treatment plans, and assist them in relocation to more appropriate housing. Recovery and support group meetings are held on a weekly basis.
Services/Facilities include:
- Case management
- Bathroom and shower facilities
- Donated clothing and toiletries
- Laundry facilities
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner
The Men’s Emergency Shelter was one of the first programs of the Coalition. For many years it operated in inadequate facilities. Through advocacy and a partnership led by the Coalition, a state-of-the-art shelter was opened in 2000 to address the needs of people experiencing housing crises.
An expansion, to both the size of the facility and the scope of services provided, is scheduled to be completed in fall 2008. With funding from the county government, the Shelter will begin providing 24/7 shelter and services to homeless men. A new project, Back-to-Work, will commence to provide vocational counseling and job training to shelter residents. The shelter will also receive a major renovation to better serve its residents. Thanks to the support of Montgomery County government and the Home Builders Care Foundation, the shelter will have new storage, laundry, kitchen, bath and shower facilities, medical exam rooms, classroom and meeting space, and private counseling offices.
